Joke of the Month
A man visits his aunt in the nursing home. It turns out that she is taking a
nap, so he just sits down in a chair in her room, flips through a few magazines,
and munches on some peanuts sitting in a bowl on the table.
Eventually, the aunt wakes up, and her nephew realizes he's absentmindedly
finished the entire bowl. "I'm so sorry, auntie, I've eaten all of your
peanuts!"
"That's okay, dearie," the aunt replied. "After I've sucked the
chocolate off, I don't care for them anyway."

-Last month's fruit was the Skunk Cabbage. The Skunk Cabbage
is a large-leafed plant that grows in wet areas, especially near streams, ponds,
marshes, and wet woods. It is easy to recognize, with its huge leaves rising
directly from the ground. The fruit heads house numerous round, berry-like fruits,
each containing one seed. In August the fruit head falls apart. The fruits lie
on the ground—to be eaten, to decompose, or to germinate (either in the
fall or next spring). It is said to be helpful in epilepsy, and convulsions
during pregnancy and labour. It is an ingredient in well-known herbal ointments
and powders. Externally, as an ointment, it stimulates granulations, eases pain,
etc.

-Fruit of the month: Tomatillo
The tomatillo or husk-tomato (Physalis philadelphica) is a solanaceous plant
cultivated in Mexico and Guatemala and originating from Mesoamerica. Various
archaeological findings show that its use in the diet of the Mexican population
dates back to pre-Columbian times. Indeed, vestiges of Physalis sp. used as
food have been found in excavations in the valley of Tehuacán (900 BC–AD
1540). In pre-Hispanic times in Mexico, it was preferred far more than the tomato
(Lycopersicon sp.).

In
the raw Local woman’s mostly uncooked recipe places second in
national contest
By Judy Grigoraci
Stacey Angel entered the world of raw foods preparation and dining after a pamphlet caught her eye. It explained the concept and gave a telephone number for further information. She called it and hasn’t looked back.
The Charleston woman recently talked about her initiation one year ago into this new way of eating and viewing nutrition: “I took Sally Miller’s raw foods class that she conducts in her home in Sherwood Forest. It was four hours of a broad overview of raw foods. Sally is a wonderful resource and great mentor.
“I went to her because, after looking at all the food fads out there, I was confused about what could be considered ‘good’ for you. The safest and single-most universally agreed-upon approach seems to be fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Professor says we are what we eat
By Tommy Simmons
Richard W. Wrangham, a professor of anthropology at Harvard
University, drew applause from the International Association of Culinary Professionals
crowd when he said that "cooking may be the key to what makes us human."
Wrangham admitted that his hypothesis is radical. Some anthropologists dismiss
cooking and describe it as something humans do for symbolic reasons, he said.
Wrangham disagrees and maintains that Charles Darwin looks increasingly perceptive in his claim that the art of making fire may have been the greatest discovery ever made.

one of the most crucial, health-affirming decisions in your life – you've
decided to stop consuming cooked foods. Now the real adventure begins - how
to stay on your raw food path. Not only are you swimming upstream, against the

What’s
not cooking in Berkeley?
Raw food’s on the menu at the Art Museum’s Café Muse By
Jonathan King, Public Affairs
It’s
sometimes hard to recall that Berkeley was once just another American town,
whose citizens cooked, served, and ate what Americans everywhere did. Then,
in the early 1970s, a new breed of restaurant broke the Boy-R-Dee mold —
along with a handful of places where Berkeleyans could shop for interesting
foods to prepare at home. Patricia Unterman’s Beggar’s Banquet,
Alice Waters’s Chez Panisse, Victoria Wise’s Pig by the Tail (a
French-style charcuterie occupying the space where the Cheeseboard Pizza Collective
now thrives), the Cheeseboard itself — all opened in quick succession,
feeling their way toward success with a reliance on enthusiastic but largely
self-taught labor, an ad hoc supply chain, and the curiosity of their clientele.

Raw food diet causes men to lose 21.8 lbs, women 26.4 lbs
By Larry Hobbs
Thursday, September 23, 2004 12:11 pm Email this article
A raw food diet causes an average weight loss of 21.8 pounds in men and 26.4 pounds in women according to a recent study from Germany.
Subjects: 216 men, 297 women
The study looked at 216 men and 297 women who had been on a raw food diet for
an average of 3.7 years.
15% of men and 25% of women were underweight
Body mass index (BMI) was below the normal range of, that is less than 18.5,
often referred to as underweight, in roughly one out of every seven men (14.7
percent) and one out of every four women (25 percent).
30% of women had stopped menstruating
Approximately 30 percent of the women had stopped having their periods. The
higher the amount of raw food that they ate, the more likely it was. Women who
ate a diet containing more than 90 percent as raw foods were more likely to
stop menstruating than women eating a more moderate raw food diet.
Conclusion: “A strict raw food diet cannot be recommended
long-term"
“The consumption of a raw food diet is associated with a high loss of
body weight,” the authors of the study concluded. “Since many raw
food dieters exhibited underweight and amenorrhea [loss of menstruation], a
very strict raw food diet cannot be recommended on a long-term basis.”
Comment: I am not convinced it is so bad
I am not convinced that the changes seen are all that harmful. I would like
to see the results of a study looking at people who have been on a raw food
diet for a long time, maybe 20 years or more, and see what they health of these
people are. The only concern I can think of is that a loss of menstruation might
also weaken the bones of women which could be a problem when they get older.
But the advantage might be a reduction—perhaps a large reduction—in
the risk of breast cancer.
