1. What are some rawfood staples in your current diet?

Coconuts, greens, avocodos, cacao, olives, and green juices. I am 100% raw 95% of the time. I got into raw foods in 1995 by reading survival in the 21st century. My yoga teacher, Kali Ray, was a big influence as well.

Raw Food Articles of the Month!

Aphrodisiac Foods and What They Claim to Do

The following is a list of foods that reportedly act as aphrodisiacs. Some are said to be aphrodisiacs simply because of their shape and some because of their aromas, while others claim a chemical basis for their "love" powers. This is by no means a complete list and, unless otherwise noted, there is no readily available research to back up their claims.

Aniseed
Also known as anise, the ancient Greeks and Romans believed that you could increase desire by sucking on anise seeds. Aniseed does include estrogenic compounds (female hormones), which have been reported to induce similar effects to testosterone.

Avocado
The avocado tree was called a "testicle tree" by the Aztecs because its fruit hangs in pairs on the tree, resembling the male testicles. Its aphrodisiac value is based on this resemblance.

Juicing for Jesus

There are many reasons why people choose to be vegan; for Matthew Yarnell, co-owner of Lilac Juice & Smoothie Co., his is a religious one. Yarnell cites Bible verses from 1 Corinthians and Romans, which say the body is a temple and a living sacrifice - essentially, maintaining a mostly raw, entirely vegan diet as a form of service to God.

S. Florida organic farm, market is a mecca for raw-food fans

MIAMI -- Served under a blue-and-white tent, the strawberry ice cream at the Coconut Grove Farmer's Market is unbelievably creamy, the tropical fruit pies are rich and succulent, and the paté-stuffed portobello mushrooms are savory.

Quite a feat, considering that all the food served here is raw and vegan -- no animal products or heat involved.

The "ice cream" is actually made of finely ground cashews, the pies sit on a pecan crumb crust and the paté stuffed inside the mushrooms is made of almonds and herbs.

Raw vegetables fuel his `engine'
By K. Srinivas Reddy

HYDERABAD: Who wouldn't agree that eating vegetables is good for health. But Jaggavarapu Rama Reddy would further qualify this statement. He would like you to eat raw vegetables and shun eating cooked ones. And you cannot disagree with him.

He has been on a raw vegetable diet for over a decade and is now a perfect picture of good health.

He got rid of his arthritis problem, his eyesight has become perfect again and his hair fall has stopped. And yes, there is a spring in his step.

More raw vegies may curb pancreatic cancer risk, study

Eating more raw vegetables every day, especially yellow and dark green ones, may help cut the risk of pancreatic cancer in half, according to researchers.

Researchers at the University of California in San Francisco found eating five or more servings of yams, corn, carrots, onions or other similar vegetables is linked with lower risk of the disease - one of the most deadly and hard-to-treat cancers.

The longevity diet by Jane Clarke

Looking younger and living longer has become something of a modern mantra — and so we dutifully drag ourselves off to the gym (or in my case, to Thai box) and spend pounds on anti-ageing creams. Then, at the first sign of any health niggle that triggers a worry about longevity, we’re off to the doctor. Or if not, perhaps we should be: after all, we far too easily succumb to heart disease and cancer, and post-menopausal women are at risk of osteoporosis (the commonest cause of disability for those over 50).

Q and A with RawGuru!

"I'm confused with all the conflicting advice for proper raw plant food combinations. Some say all plant food groups if eaten raw can be combined together because the live enzymes digest the food itself. Others say there are a few combining rules for raw plant foods. Can you please help me clear up the confusion? With much appreciation and thanks."

» I personally eat all my foods together, except for melons and other watery fruits. I feel very balanced when I eat this way. Moderation is key. A few almonds, chopped fruit, and a lot of greens! I suggest you checkout the raw secrets book. It will clear up many questions you have on the raw diet. You can purchase it here.

"I have been vegetarian for some time and totally raw for 6 months now. After some lab work, my doctor said I am low in protein and that she wants me to "eat more Protein"..... what can you recommend or suggest?"

» I would increase your protein intake...try eating foods like hemp seeds, sea veggies, green salads, and wild foods like incan berries, maca, and a product called Pure Synergy. All very high in raw protein. It may also be that you're not eating enough, try to eat a variety of nutrient dense foods.

"I have been vegan since 1995 and I went totally raw in March of this year. For the last couple of weeks I have been losing quite a bit of hair. It comes out when I take a shower and then when I comb it out and dry it, even more comes out. Why is this happening and what can I do it stop it?"

» It sounds like you are deficient in protein, zinc, iron and b-vitamins. It would be best to start introducing green juice in your diet. Blended salads also help. Foods high in protein would be sprouted nuts, seeds, sprouts and other sources. Zinc foods include pumpkin seeds, almonds, and sea veggies. Iron rich foods would include dark leafy greens, dried fruits, thyme, curry powder, cashews, hazelnuts, and watercress. You can get b-vitamins from fermented foods, and taking a liquid living b vitamin. You can purchase it here.
