PS: Trick or Treat? How 'bout an apple?

» Did you know? Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites.

» Carving Pumpkins: The Irish who had placed candles in carved turnips, found this vegetable hard to come by, and used pumpkins which were readily available and more easy to carve. This became the Jack-o-lantern that is now so much a part of our Halloween celebration.

Guess!

Last month's fruit was the
Sour Sop. The fruit is more or less oval or heart-shaped, some times irregular, lopsided or curved. The fruit is compound and covered with a reticulated, leathery-appearing but tender, inedible, bitter skin from which protrude few or many stubby, or more elongated and curved, soft, pliable "spines". The tips break off easily when the fruit is fully ripe. In aroma, the pulp is somewhat pineapple-like, but its musky, subacid to acid flavor is unique.

» Jokes of the Month

I thought you were trying to get into shape? I am. The shape I've selected is a triangle.

~~

The big problem with "fast" food is that it slows down when it hits your stomach. And it just parks there--and lets the fat have time to get off and apply for citizenship.

» Fruit of the month: Cashew Apple
The highly unusual cashew fruit consists of both a crab apple (called the cashew apple), and a kidney bean shaped appendage on the end of the fruit called the cashew nut. The apple is shaped like and is the same size as a pear; when ripe, it is a brilliant yellow, red or scarlet color. Like all fruit trees, a flower emerges and the nut grows from the center of the flower.

New Raw Food Interviews with Matt Monarch & Sarma Melngailis

Raw - by Charlie Trotter and Roxanne Klein
What are some Raw Food Staples in your current diet?

I have been on a 100% Raw Food Diet for 5 years now. I only eat Raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. I jumped into a 100% Raw Food Diet overnight after reading Become Younger, by Dr. Norman Walker. He talks about the scientific reasons why processed starches, refined sugar, dairy, and animal protein have harmful effect on the human body. He lived to be well over 100 years old...

Raw - by Charlie Trotter and Roxanne Klein What is your book, “Raw Food Real World” about?

Raw Food Real World is about our experiences going raw, particularly from the point of view of not having been even vegetarian before, and sharing our recipes from our own every day lives as well as recipes from our restaurant, Pure Food and Wine. My goal with the book was to make the whole philosophy/concept more approachable to a wider audience – to make it less intimidating – to make it hopefully compelling enough to try...

Raw Food Diet
by Victoria Boutenko

The goal of any healthy eating diet or plan is to provide the body with the necessary building blocks. Some people who feel better on the raw food diet have a hard time staying on a raw diet. It may be impossible to avoid eating cooked food through will power alone for significant periods of time. Over the past eleven years, I have been exploring the topic of how to stay off cooked foods. I have come to the conclusion that cooked food is highly addictive. Most people are unaware to what degree they cannot manage their eating habits.

Eat It Raw
By Steve Billings

Yes, rah, rah, raw! Santa Cruz embraces the raw food aesthetic at the overnight sensational Café La Vie.

Raw foods have found a home here in Santa Cruz, or better yet, a tropical island-themed oasis built upon the proverbial ashes of a '50s-style diner. Lovers of irony take note; for what was once the provenance of grill tops and deep fryers has been exchanged for food mills and juicers, dehydrators and designer-filtered water, as a diner projecting the nostalgic cool of the gas-guzzling glory years of American autos has been supplanted by recycled material design elements, organic local produce, healthy living and community enrichment as core values and business philosophy.

Author links diet to pain relief
by
DANA SANCHEZ

Harvey Diamond is the ambassador of fresh fruit. He talks about fruit the way some people talk about chocolate.

The Siesta Key resident co-authored "Fit For Life," considered a food-combining bible, in 1985. Twelve million copies have sold in 33 languages since then.

In the book, Diamond suggests eating fruit exclusively until noon every day. After that, he says don't mix proteins and starches (meat and potatoes) in the same meal.

Bare-minimum diet: Is long life the payoff?
By Kathleen Fackelmann

Khurram Hashmi has drastically cut the calories he consumes - eating mostly salads and raw vegetables - in the hopes of living a longer, better life.

But he's hungry almost all the time. "That's something for me that has never gone away, but it is easier to accept now," says Hashmi, 37. He says he used to cheat, but not anymore. The hunger tells him that the diet's working, he says.

Blenders, Sprouters, and Mashers Process Food in the East Village

Eat pretty one day: salads, soups, and desserts are what Quintessence does best.

"Yo! Any vegetarians in the house?" hollers Stic.man of hip-hop's radical duo Dead Prez. A roar and dozens of fists rise up in CBGB, which is packed. It's 3 a.m. and the young, mostly Latino crowd has been hanging all night for a showcase of politically conscious Latin bands booked by Ricanstruction. Despite the late hour, the air is strangely smoke-free.

Staying on track
BY WHITNEY ROSS

Camille Miller wasn't a chunky kid growing up. In fact, she said she was tall and skinny. But things took a turn when she was a high school junior and the pounds started piling on.

As a teen, she became inactive when she gained driving privileges and stopped playing sports.

But at 36-years-old, the Marion resident said it was time for a change for her and the thousands of kids who are considered overweight and obese.

Going meatless -- or close to it
By IN-SUNG YOO

Seven years ago, Kristin Whitcoe, of Elkton, Md., was eating like most other Americans.

One of her favorite dishes was her mother's pasta with meat sauce. When the holidays came around, she gobbled up turkey with the rest of the family.

But after she had her first child, Whitcoe began thinking more about what she was putting into her body and her child's. She switched to an organic diet, still eating meat but nothing produced with the aid of chemicals or pesticides.

Pet owners lining up to get in on a raw deal
By Willy Zimmer

CASPER - Dogs don't have the ability to share their dreams. Sometimes they lie there, yipping softly with feet churning. We assume they are dreaming of the hunt.

"Look Daddy," children have been heard to say, "Rover's chasing rabbits." The truth is Rover may be deep in a hunting fantasy, but he's not chasing rabbits for you. This old dog is probably running with the pack - and eating BARF.

Q and A with RawGuru!

"It is winter here, and I can't seem to keep myself warm eating only raw foods? What can I eat or do?"

You can start by sipping on a cup of warm water with lemon in the morning. You don't have to eat your raw foods cold. Make any raw soup you wish and heat it in a pan until you feel it getting warm to the touch. Adding spices like cayenne, ginger, turmeric will add "heat" to your raw foods. Consuming soaked nuts and seeds help during the winter months as well. One of the most important things you can do is exercise. Do push-ups, or run around your home, this will warm you up very quick. Adding a few pinches of cayenne pepper in your shoes will keep your feet nice and warm.

"What are some foods I can eat to help with my memory? Thank you."

You can eat a lot of foods to help with brain function and memory. Some of the best ones are foods rich in antioxidants, omega fatty acids, vitamin E and B-vitamins. The list includes berries, cherries, grapes, prunes, nuts and seeds, flax and hemp oils, maca, cacao nibs, goji berries, camu camu berry and herbs like turmeric and ginkgo. Supplements like DHLA help tremendously.

"What is the best way to wash fruits and vegetables? Do I have to wash my dried fruits and nuts?"

First, choose organic raw fruits and vegetables. If you can not afford this or organic is not available, I would recommend to wash in a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide and water and scrub really well the outside skins of your produce. Rinse your produce first under cool running water and then fill a large bowl of water and add 2-3 capfuls of food grade hydrogen peroxide to it and soak your produce in this mixture for 1-3 minutes. Remove from water and rinse well. Dry with a clean towel and eat or store away.

I think dried fruit and nuts do require a quick rinse because they often have dust or dirt particles on them. Nuts and seeds often have mold or mildew on their skins that are not visible to the human eye. I would soak (about 30 mins) them in pure water/h202 and rinse before using.
