Chia Seed - The Ancient Food of the Future Print E-mail

In the last twenty five years, there has been a resurrection in the definition of medicine, a resurrection that amplifies the significance of our eating habits and our lifestyle. Medicine is not only defined as a treatment for illness and disease, it is now understood to be for the prevention of illness and disease.  That would mean, for example, laughter is a medicine because research found it to boost the immune system. Exercise is good medicine for its cardio-vascular stimulation, muscle toning and flexibility and expelling toxins and for giving you a feeling of well-being, all immune boosters. To express a positive attitude towards life is not only good medicine for you, it is good medicine for those in contact with you. But the most important medicine, especially for the prevention of illness and disease, is our diet. It only needs our cooperation in supplying proper hydration and the needed nutrients to effectively maintain a state of well-being.

My friend Betsy and I weren’t looking for redemption — we’re grownups who work hard to make the world better than we found it, take both vitamins and good advice, and are not given to debauchery — and yet we found it.

At a restaurant.

Grezzo, a warm and intimate place in Boston’s foodie and famous North End, specializes in raw food cuisine. It’s no salad bar, however. On a cold February night, we sampled the chef’s lively tasting menu that featured Mushroom Tea Soup, Gnocchi Carbonara, Greek Pizza, and a Chocolate Torte, among other treats. There was not a leaf of lettuce in sight.

RAW GUIDE FOR PEOPLE WHO HATE VEGETABLES Print E-mail

In today’s fast-food society, it’s not uncommon for many people to have an aversion to vegetables, making becoming a vegetarian, vegan, or even worse, a raw foodist a little daunting. When I became a vegetarian over 40 years ago, people thought I was very strange. Now, after 40 years, a vegetarian diet is at least considered healthy, though still a little unusual. It took most of my 4 decades of gastronomic experience just to get to this point, where people at least accept vegetarianism as an reasonable idea. Now we are asking people to accept not just eating mostly vegetables as a way of life, but actually eating them raw! For some people that’s much more than just hard to accept - some people actually hate vegetables!

Enzymes have finally reached centre stage in the world of scientific research. They had previously been relegated to the lowly position of "just another protein". But now there is an ever-growing group of quantum biologists who fully understand that while the exterior physical make-up of an enzyme is protein-based, enzymes are literally the spark of all life.
