Many people wonder, is it possible to get enough protein on a vegan or vegetarian live food diet? While it is true that there are many non-vegetarian sources of concentrated protein in the world, there is a vast quantity of plant protein as well, much of which is easier for the body to assimilate. Blue green algae definitely fits this bill with 60% protein! Chlorella is one of my favorite forms of freshwater algae, I find that it is much more palatable over most brands of spirulina, goes amazingly well with savory foods, and is something that my body starts to really crave if I don’t have it for a while. It is non-fishy flavored and really quite delicious.
Chlorella is amazing for people who want to get more digestible protein in their diets, but don’t want to turn to animals sources, protein powders, or foods that also contain high levels of fats. Nuts and seeds, which are heavily used in a raw food diet, do contain fair levels of protein especially if sprouted. However, they can also be too heavy for many and actually contain more fat than protein, especially if eaten without soaking and sprouting. Amino acids are abundant in green leafy vegetables as well, but it takes quite a large amount to get adequate protein in a day for many types of metabolisms. Chlorella is amazing because it is over half protein by weight, and has very little fat or carbohydrates. It is an amazing way to easily bump your protein level up many fold.
Another aspect of chlorella is it’s amazing ability to help purify the blood and draw heavy metals and toxins out of the body. This can be great while fasting, doing a heavy metal cleanse, or just for general every day use. It is great for helping to clear up symptoms of toxicity such as bad breath and indigestion. It is extremely rich in phyto-nutrients and chlorophyll, helping to enrich and cleanse the blood. Something unique to chlorella is it’s Chlorella Growth Factor or CGF. This substance, which makes the algae grow at an amazingly rapid rate, also helps stimulate new tissue growth and healing within the bodies cells. Beneficial probiotics living within our digestive system also love CGF and multiply at a heightened rate when chlorella is consumed. Also note worthy is chlorella’s ability to protect the body from radiation, both naturally occurring and man made. It can be amazing in the treatment of and recovery from cancer. It contains a rich and full spectrum of vitamins and minerals such as beta carotene and magnesium, to name a few, in a whole food form. Unlike vitamin and mineral supplements that contain synthetic nutrients in high levels, chlorella has a very balanced nutrient profile and can’t cause toxicity. It has been used to help conditions ranging from cardiovascular disease, to low immunity, and from general fatigue and muscle weakness to fibromyalgia.
