A Nut Milk Bag is an essential tool for any raw food kitchen, as many recipes will call for the straining of fruits, nuts and seeds. These bags are called nut & seed milk bags, juicing bags, dehydrating bags and sprouting bags, reflecting the many purposes they serve. Make your raw food preparation process easier and more versatile with a small collection of nut milk bags, available at most raw food retailers.

Fruit Juice

When you use a juicer or a blender to make juices, there is often a lot of foam and pulp floating around in the final product. Nut milk bags come in handy when juicing fruits as they can be used to strain the foam and pulp out of the juice. Simply pour your freshly made juices into the bags and strain into another container. You may also put the pulp ejected by your juicer into the bag and squeeze to get even more juice out. Most nut milk bags are made of a synthetic, nylon mesh material, which works better than Cheesecloth or hemp, because it doesn’t stretch to allow any unwanted pulp to escape. Save the pulp from fruits and veggies for other recipes such as cookies, crackers, piecrust, breads or cakes.

Sprouting

These amazing bags are also useful for sprouting seeds or beans. While flax and hemp bags are traditionally used for sprouting, these bags allow more light to enter in, and are perfect for finer seeds like broccoli, alfalfa or clover, which need light for their leaves to develop chlorophyll. To use a Nut Milk Bag for sprouting, soak the seeds for the desired time and hang them to dry inside the bag. Water them several times daily until the seeds are sprouted. These bags fit conveniently in any suitcase and are useful for sprouting while travelling.

Nut and Seed Milk

This is the purpose for which these bags were originally made. Similar to juicing, you take nuts and seeds and blend them in your blender with a small amount of purified water. Then pour the juice into the bag over another container and collect the nut milk from the bottom. The nut and seed pulp will be retained inside the bag and can be saved for other recipes.

Dehydrating Foods

If you have a food dehydrator, you’re probably used to using non-stick tray sheets to dry foods. These bags can be used in their place to keep smaller seeds and crumbly foods on dehydrator trays, which allows for faster drying and better air circulation inside your food
dehydrator.

Tea

Similar to a fine mesh Strainer, these bags can be used to make your favorite herbal teas. Simply put the loose tea inside, and lower the bag into hot water to steep.

Cheese

Use the nut and seed pulp you saved when you strained the nut milk in your favorite raw food cheese recipes. After blending the ingredients, place the cheese mixture in a Nut Milk Bag to ferment. Hang it above a bowl or sink to catch the whey. Once the cheese has fermented, mix in herbs, spices and nut and seed pulp.
