Durian: King of Fruits or Fruit of the Kings? I would have to say that it’s probably both. If you’ve never experienced a durian (and i say “experience” because enjoying a durian is definitely multi layered and involves way more than just taste), it is most definitely something that MUST be tried at least once in this lifetime. People either hate durians or are obsessed with them, there really isn’t much room for an indecisive attitude about the matter. There is no other, and i mean absolutely no other fruit quite like it. The entire energy of the durian is very regal in my opinion, this fruit knows whose boss.
Durian is a native fruit of southeastern Asia, and is very ancient. You can tell just by the way it looks that it is prehistoric. It has developed quite the protective outer shell to last many millennia. Just check out those spikes, already you will be impressed. The trees often reach 100+ feet, so quite a fall for the ripe durian to make it’s transition to the ground below.
Curious as to what this spiky dangerous looking fruit tastes like? The texture of a perfect durian is like custard. Exactly like custard. How a fruit could produce a texture, consistency, and richness of flavor as something that involves mixing, whisking, cooking and loads of sugar is beyond me. The color is light cream to light yellow in color. The flavor is multi faceted and hard to define. It is very creamy and sweet and tastes of vanilla custard, almonds, banana/papaya, but also has a slight sulfur oniony flavor. Occasionally i’ve gotten durians that taste mildly of soy sauce. Now the first part sounds great, how the later flavors work together is sort of a mystery. I will say that the first time i tried durian i nearly gagged and spit it out. The second time i was skeptical, but decided that it was really quite good after a few bites. By the 3rd time i was hooked and haven’t looked back since! Is it possible to enter a mildly altered state of consciousness from simply eating a fruit? With durian i’d say it’s not only possible but likely! Durian has a very relaxing and nourishing quality on my nervous system, and makes me feel very peaceful and zen. There are enough people out there that have a similarly blissful experience that there has to be something to this. This fruit is magical.
Nutritionally speaking durian is a great source of b vitamins, vitamin A, and a host of minerals such as Calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese. It is nutritionally very rich, containing high levels of protein and fat, much more than other tropical fruits. It is very filling, I like to eat durian on it’s own as a mono meal and I feel it digests best this way. One of my favorite treats of ALL time is frozen durian meat, eaten as an “ice cream”, but instead of dessert I eat it for breakfast, ideally sitting on the earth in a sunny spot. Talk about bliss!
You can get your hands on fresh, raw, organic durian meat right here at RawGuru . Here is some info about the durian that we offer in the store, as it is very unique. Most of the durian sold in the States is conventionally grown in Thailand, and possibly irradiated, sprayed with chemicals, and fumigated. The durian we offer is grown on small farms in Thailand, and bypasses the USDA’s inspections and treatments due to the fact that we are only importing the flesh, not the outer shell where many bugs like to hide. Ours is shipped fresh overnight to the States under constant refrigeration. The durian meat is never frozen. This process basically ensures that only the freshest durian is sent over, creating a durian dining experience that will transport you straight to Thailand! Once the durian meat makes it to the States, it is then FedEx overnight delivered to our much loved customers.
It is now the beginning of durian season, so we are getting the best tasting durian now and through the summer months! Now is the perfect time to try out a case (or 2) of this amazing fruit.
