Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland, which is responsible for energy use in the body, becomes overactive. Since itís functioning at a higher than normal rate, metabolism speeds up. This can cause symptoms such as sudden weight loss, rapid heartbeat, increased appetite, nervousness, sweating, and fatigue, among others .

Common treatment for hyperthyroidism is through medication, but recent research shows changes in diet may also be an effective treatment plan. As hyperthyroidism is often caused by an auto-immune disorder, scientists looked to societies where auto-immune diseases are rare, such as rural populations. These people generally follow a plant-based diet.

A study published in Public Health Nutrition, as part of the Adventist Health Study, examined the diets and medical histories of 66,000 vegetarians.

Researchers found that those who were Lacto-ovo (including eggs and dairy) and pesco- vegetarian (including fish) diets showed only moderate protection, and semi-vegetarian diets showed no protection against hyperthyroidism. Vegetarians that excluded ALL animal foods had HALF the prevalence of hyperthyroidism when compared to those who did consume animal products.

There are other things that contribute to the development of hyperthyroidism such as BMI. Even after making statistical adjustments for these factors, a plant-based diet still showed a significant reduction in risk.

The study suggested that the benefits of a vegan diet may be due to the absence of animal products which tend to contain high amounts of estrogen, often linked to autoimmune disease.

The benefits could also result from increased intake of phytonutrients and antioxidants found in plant foods. These nutrients have a significant immune-boosting effect and could be contributing to protection from hyperthyroidism.

A great way to increase antioxidant intake is to follow a raw food diet, meaning processed foods are eliminated and one focuses on alive, vibrant and fresh natural produce.

Advocates of a raw food diet, such as myself, claim that eating foods in their most natural raw state ensures a multitude of vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, antioxidants and phytochemicals are available to the body for optimum functioning.

So you've finally called it quits with the white stuff this year…congratulations! Avoiding processed sugar is one of the best steps you can take towards becoming your healthiest self. If the thought of not having a sweet treat leaves you in a sour mood (pun intended) you'll be happy to know that there is no need to completely deprive that sweet tooth of yours. There are some incredible alternatives to standard refined sugar that will lend the sweet taste you crave, albeit in a much healthier way.

Coconut Sap Sugar

Perhaps the most versatile of sugar alternatives, coconut sugar can be used to replace white table sugar in a perfect 1:1 ratio. Coconut sugar is crystalized from coconut sap found within coconut palm flower blossoms. It has a delicious maple and caramel-like flavor that lends very well in a variety of dessert recipes. Your pancreas will also thank you, as coconut sugar contains a type of fiber called inulin, which slows glucose absorption helping to prevent a quick rise and fall of blood sugar levels. It is also rich with minerals potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus with trace amounts also of boron, zinc, manganese, iron and copper.

Coconut Nectar

Like coconut sugar, coconut nectar comes from the coconut palm, however it is still in a liquid form. It provides the same health benefits of coconut sap sugar (low glycemic and rich with minerals), but is better suited for applications that require liquid sweeteners. It's flavor and texture is very similar to that of molasses.

A raw food diet is based on the consumption of unprocessed, plant-based foods, usually fruits and vegetables (preferably organic). This diet has numerous health benefits, and it is widely believed it can prevent cancer.

Why has raw food?

The greatest advantage of raw food is in the fact it retains the complete nutritional value. On the other hand fried or overcooked foods lose a significant portion of their nutritional value and the person doesn’t get all benefits from that food then. The very first get you notice when you start with raw food died is increased energy level that also positively affects your sleeping pattern as well.

Due to a high amount of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that our body needs to retain healthy functioning, your skin will restore the healthy glow. Another great benefit of raw food is the positive effect on digestion. Fruits and vegetables have high levels of dietary fiber and high fiber diet is associated with blood sugar control, weight loss management and many other health benefits.

Moreover, according to the report published in Food Technology in October 2012, plant-based diets have the ability to significantly reduce or completely eliminate individual’s genetic predisposition to develop chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and even cancer.

Additionally, various epidemiologic studies have associated raw food consumption with decreased risk of cancer. Animal studies and experiments using isolated cells also showed same results. After all, raw and uncooked fruits and vegetables are the best sources of nutrients.

Raw food for everyone

Raw food diet can be fun as much as it is beneficial for our health. The key is to know what foods to eat and how to prepare them to include the variety of meals to your diet in an easy manner. For example, the book raw food for everyone written by leading raw foods authority and teacher Alissa Cohen offers 300 different recipes for the raw diet.

The book includes basic recipes that can be prepared as well as more demanding ones. Moreover, there are also recipes for delicious smoothies, juices, and you-won't-believe-they’re-raw chips and crackers. In a short period of time this book became the culinary classic and is a perfect guide for all people who want to improve their health with raw diet and eat delicious meals that will provide various health benefits and aid in detoxification of their organism.

Cancer-killing nutrients in vegetables and fruits

Researchers isolated and identified many chemicals in vegetables and fruits that may prevent or aid in cancer treatment.  For example:

•    Carotenoids – they are pigments that give fruits and vegetables their bright colors.

There are different types of carotenoids such as beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, etc. Carotenoids act as antioxidants with powerful cancer-fighting characteristics. They protect cells from free radicals and lower the risk of different types of cancer, including lung, skin, breast, prostate cancer, etc. Found in sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach…

•    Vitamin C – found in citrus fruits and juices, green peppers, cauliflower, and many other fruits and vegetables. Consumption of Vitamin C can lower the risk of mouth cancer and other cancers. However, it only works for Vitamin C consumed through the diet, not supplements.

•    Vitamin E – acts as an antioxidant and deficiency of Vitamin E is associated with increased risk of getting cancer. This vitamin decreases a risk of colon, prostate, and lung cancer. Also, it can be found in cilantro, broccoli, avocados, blueberries, etc.

•    Folic acid – prevents colon and cervical cancer and high concentrations of folic acid are found in green leafy vegetables.

•    Fiber – most fruits and vegetables are a great source of fiber. Therefore, raw food can be considered as high fiber diet. Diet improves our digestion and aids in detoxification that reduce a risk of colon cancer and other types of stomach cancers.

•    Dithiolethiones and glucosinolates – found in cruciferous vegetables and prevent cancer by an elimination of carcinogens before they damage DNA.

•    Phytoestrogens – act like weak versions of the hormone estrogen. Consumption of foods with this nutrient (bean sprouts, peas, etc.) decreases the level of estrogen circulating in woman’s body. High levels of estrogen that circulate in the body are associated with increased risk of breast cancer.

 Fruit juices

If you like making delicious fruit juices, then their cancer-fighting properties are the additional reason for continue with your juicing habit. For example, raw pineapple contains bromelain that is an enzyme that proved to be more successful than chemotherapy in cancer treatment according to the research published in the journal Planta Medica.

Do you like grapes? Then consumption of grapes and making fruit juices with these lovely fruits can aid in the prevention of cancer as well. They contain natural chemicals that have a great potential to prevent cancer cells from spreading. This was confirmed by the study conducted at the University of Illinois. This study also adds to the consumption of raw food as cancer-preventing components from grapes are more effective than the usage of supplements.

Cancer-fighting foods

Due to their structure that includes a lot of vitamins, minerals, and other health-boosting nutrients, fruits and vegetables can prevent and fight cancer as well. Here are some of them:

• Nuts – study published in the journal BMC Medicine reveals consumption of nuts reduces the risk of getting cancer by 40%.

• Carrot – according to scientists, carrots could be key to successful cancer treatment.

They contain powerful cancer-fighting properties including compound falcarinol that reduced tumors in rats by a third.

• Sweet potatoes – are rich in antioxidants, especially beta-carotene, which helps in detoxification , eliminates toxins from the body and protects from various chronic diseases and cancer.

• Sunflower seeds – great source of selenium that improves detoxification and is associated with cancer prevention. Selenium enhances DNA repair and synthesis in damaged cells.

• Garlic – various studies showed that garlic and its compound allyl sulfur are effective inhibitors of the cancer process. Of 37 studies in humans using garlic and allyl sulfur, 28 studies showed cancer-fighting properties. Garlic’s positive effect on preventing cancer isn’t related to only one carcinogen or particular tissue, but the entire organism.

Raw food diet has numerous health benefits, including improved detoxification of the body and cancer prevention. Plus, it is versatile; fruits and vegetables can be consumed through juices, smoothies, and delicious meals.

Long gone are the days when animal products were viewed as the only and best way of getting adequate protein levels. We now know that the plant kingdom not only offers the human body sources for complete protein but that these sources are often ideal because they are less taxing on our digestive systems, livers, and kidneys, and are easier for us to assimilate. For most of us the quality and quantity of protein that we consume on a daily basis plays a huge role in how we feel, how we look, and the level of health and fitness we enjoy. If you're looking for the best way to get a little extra protein action in a convenient and delicious way look no further than Epic Protein by Sprout Living.

All Epic Protein is formulated with a base of highly nutritious, organic, sprouted, and bio-fermented whole grain brown rice. This brown rice is low-temperature processed in such a wayas to maximize protein content and seriously enhance its overall digestibility. Through this unique process starches and carbohydrates are minimized and the texture becomes very silky, lightweight, and refined, making it blend flawlessly into protein shakes and smoothies.

Within Epic Protein you'll find all 9 essential amino acids, including the "branch chain amino acids" isoleucine, valine, and leucine which are crucial for muscle endurance and overall athletic performance. These amino acids are quick to digest, have 98.2% bio-availability for the human body, have a 98% correlation to mother's milk, and are naturally 100% free of gluten and non-allergenic. Epic Protein is also free of ALL chemical and "natural" additives, flavors, and refined or artificial sugars, and wont negatively effect the endocrine system like many proteins made from a base of dairy or soy.

While pure brown rice protein is the only ingredient in Epic Protein's original formula, they've taken it many steps further by blending in some of the world's tastiest and most nutritious superfoods to create 3 additional flavors: Vanilla Lucuma, Chocolate Maca, and their newest and super exciting addition: Green Kingdom. Together they form an absolutely delicious and dynamic quartet of raw plant-based, protein-rich goodness!

So, which flavor is best for you? Choose one or try them all!

Original  contains sprouted and bio-fermented whole grain brown rice protein powder with nothing else added. The taste is mild and pleasant and will add a hint of brown rice flavor toyour recipes. This formula packs the most protein content of the bunch with 23 grams per serving.

Bone Renewal

It's likely that if you're already living a healthy lifestyle or are eating an "alternative" style diet such as high raw, you've at least considered the health of your bones. You may have even asked yourself (or been asked by friends and family) whether it's possible to get enough calcium on a raw food or vegan diet. There is definitely a lot of information out there these days, and with that comes many different opinions. What many people don't realize is that consuming the required levels of bone building minerals such as calcium is important, it is really just a fraction of the puzzle. We also need to look at how many of those minerals we are actually absorbing into our bones and what we may be doing that could be causing a leaching of minerals from our already existing bone tissue. Since our skeletal system acts as the very framework for our entire body, these are valuable questions. The health and strength of our bones (all 200+ of them) is of paramount importance!

More to the picture than just calcium: The role of other nutrients such as Vitamin D, silicon and magnesium

Our bodies are highly integrated machines that can't simply rely on one or two things to function. It is an absolutely complicated yet brilliantly orchestrated system of interconnectedness. Everything working together towards one simple goal: survival. That being said, simply focusing on calcium and not other important factors when it comes to our bones would be like seriously ignoring a huge piece of the puzzle.

One nutrient that has gotten a lot of press time lately is Vitamin D, a vitamin that is absolutely necessary for the absorption of calcium. It is found in animal sourced foods such as eggs, fish and dairy (especially grass fed) and even in some plants such as wild mushrooms. It appears to be harder to get enough of this vitamin from dietary sources on a vegan diet. However there is hope as the best way of getting an abundance of Vitamin D has never been from diet alone. In fact our skin is the best Vitamin D manufacturing machine around and as long as we're getting proper unfiltered sunlight on our skin (at least 15 minutes a day for adults is recommended by the American Dietetics Association) we will not likely become deficient in this vitamin. The form of Vitamin D synthesized within our skin is Vitamin D3, while the form synthesized by plants is D2. If you find that you're not able to get enough sun exposure for adequate Vitamin D production there are several supplement companies such as Garden of Life and MegaFood producing quality Vitamin D supplements. Be aware that these supplements are not vegan however, as they are derived from sheep lanolin. Vitamin D is also extremely important for our immune systems and hormone regulation.

Silicon is another important piece to the bone puzzle especially for those of us wanting to eat a primarily plant based diet. Silicon is a crystalline mineral found abundantly in the plant kingdom that has the ability to transform itself into calcium within the body. This compound is already found within our body; in our blood vessels, bones, cartilage, muscles, lymphatic system, nails, teeth, tendons and more, and helps our connective tissue stay elastic yet resilient. It is considered to be one of the top beauty minerals as it helps create strong and lustrous hair, skin, and nails. While silicon can in fact be found in numerous plant sources (it is the most abundant element on Earth next to oxygen) it only appears in high concentrations in several select foods such as nettles, horsetail, mature grasses, radishes, cucumbers (leave the skin in tact if possible), oats , burdock root, young greens, and hemp leaf. Nettles in particular, while a bit intimidating due to their prickly sting, are actually a tender, mild flavored and tasty green that can easily be wild harvested. Just make sure to wear gloves while handling and use them in a blended soup, green smoothie, or salad dressing as the blending process will neutralize their sting. You can also find nettle leaf as well as horsetail in their dried form; they can be used to make a robust and earthy flavored tea served hot or cold.

Magnesium is a very important mineral when it comes to strong bones and is considered to be one of the top macro-nutrients needed within our bodies; 3 others being calcium, sodium and potassium. It is a co-factor that acts to regulate more than 300 biochemical reactions and processes occurring within the body, driven by certain enzymes. it is intricately linked to our cells ability to produce energy and is also a building block for the structures within our body, both big and small. It also plays an important role in keeping our nerves and muscles relaxed and our blood circulating in a fluid and unrestricted manner. That being said, about 60-65 % of this mineral is found in our bones, making it a crucial bone strengthener. Amazingly it is part of our bones integrated crystaline "scaffolding" structure, bound together with phosphorus and calcium. Our bones also store magnesium in their outer coating, to utilize in times of poor dietary intake. You can eat all the calcium in the world, but without it's counter-part magnesium it will be of little use to our bones. Luckily magnesium is found abundantly in the plant kingdom. Think all kinds of green leafy veggies and raw chocolate (raw cacao) !

What does pH have to do with it?

One of the main issues with the vast majority of people's modern diet of processed foods is that their bodies become very acidic eating this way. While our bodies can put up with a fair amount of abuse and bounce back, one thing that remains quite delicately balanced is the pH of our blood. Our blood has to maintain a narrow and slightly alkaline pH of 7.35 to 7.45 in order for us to continue on, so as we acidify ourselves the body is forced to pull together resources to remedy it. These resources are actually the precious alkaline minerals from our bones, the main one being, you guessed it, calcium! Pasteurized dairy is an extremely acidifying food and is therefore not the ideal choice when it comes to building strong bones. The calcium sources we should be looking for our ones rich in alkaline minerals, primarily those found in green leafy vegetables. If you want big strong bones like an ox then eat greens, greens, and more greens! Also lets not forget the importance of deep breathing which oxygenates our tissues while alkalinizing and cleansing our blood.

Fantastic alkaline food sources for bone building minerals:

brown and black sesame seeds and raw sesame tahini , collards, swiss chard, romaine lettuce, kale, micro greens, green sprouts such as sunflower, broccoli, clover, alfalfa, etc., bok choy, cabbage (both raw and cultured in kimchi and sauerkraut) sea vegetables such as kombu, kelp , sea lettuce, and nori , micro algae such as spirulina, chlorella and E3 Live , raw cacao , wildcrafted herbs such as horsetail and nettle leaf
